With rotations at diverse institutions, residents enjoy comprehensive training in pediatric emergency medicine and benefit from progressive clinical responsibility. First and second year residents complete rotations in the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department and learn to diagnose and treat common childhood disorders with outstanding County clinical teaching.
Second, third, and fourth year residents learn to care for acutely ill children, frequently with complex congenital and metabolic disorders, in the specialized emergency departments of Children’s Memorial Hospital and the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital. Both institutions are pediatric Level I trauma centers.
The pediatric experience is completed in the final year with four weeks in the Stroger Cook County Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. With the guidance of pediatric intensivists from Stroger and Rush University Medical Center, the senior resident is responsible for supervising all patient care.
