Residents work three to six four-week rotations in the adult emergency department each year. Changing daily team assignments create a dynamic work environment. Patient care responsibilities gradually increase to provide a challenging, yet comfortable, learning experience.
First and second year residents evaluate and manage emergency patients from fast track to red team while providing telemetry medical back up for the Chicago Fire Department ambulances.
Third year residents become the Resuscitation Residents, focusing primarily on the evaluation and management of critically ill patients. Fourth years supervise all patient care on the team while working with the attending, nursing and administrative staff to improve patient flow in the entire ED.
With the demands of the high patient volume and acuity, residents work twenty eight-hour shifts per month, allowing plenty of time for reading, research and recreation!
