The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) provides top-quality multidisciplinary care to patients recovering from major surgical procedures. Patient care is provided by experienced physicians certified in Surgery or Anesthesia with added qualification in Critical Care, and are members of the Division of Surgical Critical Care in the Department of Surgery.
The SICU follows current best-practice guidelines and protocols, which are constantly revised to keep up with the current medical literature. In addition, the SICU places strong emphasis on quality assurance and improvement. We believe in efficiency and strict attention to detail, so that smooth patient flow through our SICU can lead to quicker recovery and rehabilitation with a minimum of complications.
Physicians are assisted by a clinical nutritionist, clinical pharmacist, respiratory therapist, speech therapist, social worker, and physiotherapist who supplement the excellent nursing care provided by our skilled ICU nurses. We supervise the education of Medical Students, Residents, and Surgical Critical Care Fellows rotating through the SICU and place a strong emphasis upon education in addition to excellent clinical care.
