Cook County Head & Neck Team organizes a successful symposium on Oral Oncology.
Cook County Head & Neck team hosted World Renowned and Distinguished Professor and Chair, Dr. Fu-Chan Wei as the key note speaker at the “Cook County Symposium on Oral Oncology”. The program was widely attended by surgeons and physicians from the Chicago Land Area with specialties represented including Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Radiation Oncology, General Surgery, and Dentistry.
OMFS Faculty and residents support PCRF Gala:
OMFS faculty and residents attended the PCRF Gala on March 17, 2018. The Palestinian Children Relief Fund (PCRF) is a non-profit, non-political organization that provides medical and specialized surgical care to children in the middle east regardless of nationality, religion, or race.
Dr. Boukheir to present oral abstract at ACOMS 39th Annual Meeting.
Dr. Mohamed Boukheir will be presenting an oral abstract at the American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS) 39th Annual Meeting in New Orleans Louisiana . The title of the abstract presentation is “A cost effective alternative to patient specific milled reconstruction plates: the predictive hole technique.” Faculty preceptor: Mohammed Qaisi DMD, MD, FACS
OMFS faculty receives prestigious award at AAOMS annual meeting.
Dr. Mohammed Qaisi DMD, MD, FACS was awarded the Faculty Educator Development Award (FEDA) at the 99th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (AAOMS) which was held in San Francisco October 11-14, 2017
Dr. Boliere announced winner at the 6th Annual ACOMS Resident Research Forum:
Dr. Christian Boliere was selected as a winner at the 6th Annual American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS) Resident Research Forum. Dr. Boliere’s talk was entitled “Fibula Jaw in a Day”. Presentation was co-authored by faculty preceptor Dr. Mohammed Qaisi DMD, MD, FACS. As a winner Dr. Boliere will receive complimentary registration and reimbursement for travel expenses of up to $500 to attend the ACOMS 39th Annual Scientific Conference and Meeting in New Orleans Louisiana.
Dr. Qaisi lectures in Taipei, Taiwan:
Dr. Mohammed Qaisi DMD, MD, FACS lectured to the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the prestigious Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan on April 5, 2017. Dr. Qaisi lectured on the “Fibula Jaw in a Day Procedure” which involves a one stage reconstruction of the Jaws using a vascularized fibula free flap with immediate implants and prosthesis placement. Dr. Robert Ord DDS, MD, FACS, FRCS Gives Grand Rounds Lecture:
Dr. Robert Ord DDS, MD, FACS, FRCS gave a lecture on “Management of Ameloblastoma” to Cook County residents and faculty on December 2, 2016 at their departmental grand rounds.
Dr. Ord is an Endowed Professor and Chair of the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Ord is world-renowned in the field of head & neck oncology and maxillofacial pathology and has lectured and published on these topics extensively. He has over a 130 peer reviewed publications, authored several textbooks, and has been the recipient of many prestigious awards.
This month we say farewell to Dr. Andrew W. Olsen who completed his four-year oral & maxillofacial surgery residency. He will be joining a group practice in Traverse City, Michigan. We recognize Dr. Robert Beech and Dr. John Chae as the new chief residents for the 2015-2016 academic year.
We would like to welcome our first year residents, Dr. Taneenop Aramphongphan and Dr. Anthony Elger along with our interns, Dr. Ryan Brown and Dr. Junaid Mundiya.
Congratulations to all of those who matched! The Cook County OMFS department matched both categorical positions within this years group of highly competitive applicants. The program is excited for the upcoming academic year and is looking forward to working with our new soon-to-be first year residents.
On January 21st chairman, Dr. Henry Fung and chief resident, Dr. Jason Primavera presented at the Chicago Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, ‘Interesting and Difficult Cases.’ The meeting was attended by residents and faculty from Cook County, UIC and Loyola oral & maxillofacial surgery programs along with prominent practicing oral & maxillofacial surgeons in the greater Chicago area.
In September our Chief resident Dr. Andrew Olsen successfully presented Dr. Fung’s CIG lecture on Anesthesia presentation ( Perioperative Anesthesia Clinical Considerations of Alternative Medicine.) at the AAOMS 96th National meeting in Honolulu Hawaii. Dr. Olsen did a great job.
Dr. Andrew Olsen and Dr. Robert Beech both attended the Orthognathic surgical dissection course sponsored by Stryker surgical company this October at LSU in New Orleans.
During the same period the second year residents Dr. Austin and Dr. Meehan both attended the KLS SORG meeting. We welcome Mid-Western University senior dental students starting their Oral Surgery rotation at County hospital in August.
This month we say farewell to Dr. Ben Johnson and Dr. Calley Christie who have finished their four year oral maxillofacial surgical residency at Cook County Hospital. Both doctors are from the west coast and have returned to practice the full scope of oral surgery. During the farewell dinner both Dr. Chrisite and Dr. Johnson were given their four year OMS certificates. Dr. Johnson was also recognized with a certificate of merit for scoring in the 98th percentile on the yearly in-service exam (OMSITE). This exam is scored against all other residents across the country. Dr. Phil Meehan was awarded a certificate for resident of the year. This award is given to the resident who shows exemplary performance. Dr. Meehan is a new second year resident, has a positive attitude in everything he does and scored in the 50th percentile on the in-service exam as a first year resident. A congratulations goes out to the entire surgical residency. This year the entire service scored higher than the majority of oral surgery residents across the nation. We want to recognize the hard work put in by our chairman, Dr. Fung, to motivate the residents. We also recognize the hard work and dedication by the residents to study for and prepare for this exam, especially with the tremendous surgical load we carry at Cook County Hospital.
This month we also recognize the new chief residents, Jason Primavera and Andrew Olsen and give a warm welcome to the new first year residents and non-categorical interns.
Happy New Year! January is usually a slow month for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, but not at Cook County. Extractions, implants, trauma, pathology and mandibular reconstruction has been keeping our service busy. This month we have also jump started a combined program Grand Rounds Lecture. This month we invited Dr. Louis Mercuri to speak to us about total joint reconstruction. We invited Loyola University Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to join us. The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Match is also this month. We are excited to see who will be joining our program next year. Good luck to all the applicants!

This month started out with the Cook County Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program attending the AAOMS sponsored Implant Conference in Chicago. Following the Implant Conference several members of the OMFS program attended the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology Conference also held in Chicago. The conferences were a great educational opportunity. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Dr. Johnson was able to attend a cadaver course sponsored by Stryker in Las Vegas. Dr. Tucker, Dr. Ochs, Dr. Farrell, Dr. Gruss, and Dr. Herford reviewed surgical approaches and pearls regarding orthognathic and craniofacial surgery. The following weekend Dr. Johnson presented a case report at the American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgerys 2nd Annual Residents Meeting hosted by Thomas Jefferson University Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. This month we are also interviewing two groups of 14 residents each. Good luck to this years applicants!
Dr. Fung attended the AAOMS meeting this year in Orlando with the two chief residents Dr. Johnson and Dr. Christie. Dr. Fung was a faculty instructor at the SIM Lab emergency anesthesia station. Dr. Johnson will be attending an orthognathic conference in Las Vegas sponsored by Stryker. He will also be representing Cook County Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at this years ACOMS resident meeting.
Applications are now being reviewed for the 2014 academic year. Dr. Johnson and Dr. Christie will be attending this years national meeting for AAOMS in Orlando, FL in October. Dr. Fung will be teaching at the anesthesia SIM class at the AAOMS meeting as well. Dr. Johnson will also be attending an orthognathic review course in Las Vegas and will be attending the ACOMS meeting in Philadelphia.
Welcome to the new residents and interns. CCH OMS is now offering two non-categorical internship positions. This internship will offer rotations with anesthesia, as well as being full participants in outpatient and ambulatory anesthesia clinical patients, as well as opportunity to go to the operating room.
Dr. Fung presented as one of five renowned head and neck surgeons at the Stryker sponsored Surgical Foundations Course offered in Chicago, IL. The meeting was thought provoking, educational, and included a wonderful hands on simulation laboratory. Residents were able to work individually with the faculty to simulate surgical approaches and plating techniques. Dr. Fung presented on orbital trauma and reconstruction as well as presenting other surgical cases for discussion between residents and faculty. Dr. Fung will be teaching at this years AAOMS meeting in the SIM Lab.
This month our program is also saying goodbye to residents Dr. Sterrett and Dr. Reid. They will soon be finishing their four year surgical training and CCH OMS would like to wish them the best of luck. Dr. Johnson and Dr. Christie are the Chief Residents for the year.
