Hearing loss is the third most common chronic condition among older people, after hypertension and arthritis, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).

Hearing loss can develop slowly over years. It could be hereditary.
It usually worsens with age, and tends to be permanent and painless. Often, it’sa combination of two things: the aging process and noise.

“The world is a lot noisier than it was 50 years ago”, says Audiologist Roger Tharp, AuD. “Protect your hearing by using earplugs when exposed to prolonged, loud noise. What’s too loud? Anything that causes a ringing in your ears, difficulty in hearing for hours after exposure, or if you have to yell above the noise to be heard.”

Hearing screening at Oak Forest Health Center on Thursday, May 3, 2012, 8:30AM – 11:30AM. Call 708-633-3373 for information.

Test results will be explained and recommendations made upon completion of testing, including a hearing aid evaluation if necessary.
