Since the first kidney transplantation in 1954, medical science has advanced tremendously. For many people fighting devastating illness, donated organs and tissues are the sole chance for recovery.
Every 10 minutes, another name is added to the national organ transplant list.
As of March 2012, there are about 113,000 individuals awaiting transplants; nearly 5.000 are in Illinois. Approximately two-thirds of them are waiting for kidneys, with an average wait time for kidneys in Illinois: 5 – 7 years.
As of January 2006, Illinois moved to a first-person consent registry, making it imperative that anyone 18 years of age or older RE-REGISTER their wish to be an organ/tissue donor. More than 6 million people have now registered in Illinois.
The “Donate Life” movement hopes to register 20 million people as potential donors in 2012. Visit www.donatelifeIllinois.org to register and for more information.
